4th Grade Explorers 2
Theme: Communication
Unit of Study: Ancient Egypt/Archaeology
Greek Mythology
This year, the 4th grade students' scope, or big idea, is communication and how it relates to different cultures and time periods. The first unit the students will focus on is Ancient Egypt/Archaeology where they will learn about several different topics of the Ancient Egyptian culture. The second unit the students will study is Greek Mythology.Introducing heroes, heroines, gods, and goddesses, this cooperative learning unit enables students to explore the mystical world of Greek mythology. Teams of three students work together to climb to the top of Mt. Olympus, reading myths and cooperatively analyzing two of the myths together. Students must overcome a final obstacle (a boulder on the mountain) in order to reach the summit and
receive an "Olympic Achievement Award." For example, the boulder may be writing a summary of one of the perils that Odysseus faced on his voyage home to Ithaca, or identifying the 12 labors of Heracles.
